Guayaquil is the commercial center and the largest seaport of Ecuador. A vibrant city, growing ever more modern and versatile. Located in southwest Ecuador along the banks of the Guayas River, which flowers into the Pacific Ocean. 

Usually, tourists visit Guayaquil on the way to the beaches on the Pacific coast or the Galapagos Islands, but here I want to share a “compact” Guayaquil travel guide, where I’ll cover the basics of how to get around the city, where to stay, and what’s worth seeing.

INGAPIRCA: THE ECUADOR’S VERSION OF A MINI MACHU PICCHU

Ingapirca, one of my favorite spots and the highlight of my Ecuador trip in December. In Kichwa, Inka Pirka means „Inca wall”, which is located in Cañar Province,, and the name of the older Inca ruins and archeological site nearby. This is Ecuador’s version of a mini Machu Picchu, and the largest known Inca ruins in Ecuador. The most significant building is the Temple of the Sun, an elliptically shaped building constructed around a large rock.

Cuenca, is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Ecuador, located in the highlands of Ecuador at about 2,560 m above sea level. This gem is surrounded by the Andes mountains, divided by the river Tomebamba next to the city center. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its many historical buildings and its historical importance as an agricultural and administrative center of Ecuador.

A VISIT TO ECUADORIAN CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Last week, my friend Ade took me to a cocoa fields of Hacienda El Castillo. A beautiful hacienda built in the 1930’s by the German Count Ludwig Weber von Wagenfuer and his wife Mrs. MarÌa Angelica Calero. At the end of the 1980’s, new owners bought part of what today is the Hacienda El Castillo, where the ruins of the villa where found. For more than 20 years, this small family business has been based on an agricultural, tourism and industrial operation, contributing to the area’s development.

CASA DEL ALABADO: MUSEUM OF PRE-COLUMBIAN ART

Monolith – Culture Valdivia 4000 B.C. – 1500 B.C.

A visit to Casa del Alabado Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, is a must for history and anthropology fans. Located in a wonderfully preserve building, this museum features sculpture, artefacts, jewellery pieces and more. I learned about Ecuador’s indigenous cultures and saw hundreds of archaeological objects belonging to the ancient societies that occupied the territory known today as Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian capital city located in the middle of the world, standing proud between cloud-high in the Andes and two active volcanoes, Quito didn’t disappoint me. The 16th-century Centro Histórico (Old Town) is not only the largest and best-preserved colonial center in Latin America, but also the most visited.

Thanks to KLM and Air France, the approx. 15-hour journey from Vienna to Quito was a wonderful experience. Click HERE to read about my journey.
